In Starsand, they'd likely just run away from you if you get close enough, but expect a nasty bite if you pester one too much. Like Rabbits, Rats are pretty much everywhere, and don't require much of an explanation. They stand a good chance of getting away too, as not only are Rock Hyraxes fast little things, but they're likely to vanish into a burrow that's not too far from where you spot them. Rock Hyraxes wouldn't pose any threat to the player, and would flee if approached. They're known for living in rocky and/or hilly areas, so they'd be right at home in the northern mountains. These little critters live all over the Sahara Desert, and also around the southern end of Africa. Unlike frogs, Lizards can be expected to run much faster.ĭespite looking like Groundhogs, the diminutive Rock Hyrax is most closely related to Elephants. Like frogs, they won't be a threat, will flee if approached, and won't yield much meat if killed. I don't know much about the Lizards native to the Sahara Desert, but they'll be a useful addition not only for atmosphere, but also because they're one of the few critters you won't find glued to the oases almost all the time. They wouldn't be all that different in terms of how they fit into the game, but there would be a little more variety as a result. I'll spare you the Wiki page worth of info, and note that Oryx would be easy to integrate into the game by simply altering the model of the Gazelle slightly, re-skinning it, and making an extra file for them. As silly as it may be, taming an Ostrich could be a viable alternative to a Camel in Starsand. If harvested, an Ostrich would yield lots of both meat and leather (Ostrich leather is the strongest known), so hunting them might be a good idea.įinally, Ostriches have been ridden by people as mounts, even with saddles and reigns. Outrunning an Ostrich simply isn't going to happen, because the only faster land animal is the Cheetah. Ostriches will likely for the most part ignore the player, and could flee if approached, but they may retaliate if attacked (especially in physical combat), and their talons are pretty nasty. It's also not unknown for Ostriches to travel alongside other animals. These birds almost never drink, even in desert environments, so they'd be right at home in this game. The Arabian Ostrich became extinct in 1966, but they wouldn't be the weirdest thing to encounter in Starsand. There are two extant species Common Ostriches, and Somali Ostriches. These birds can't fly, but will use their wings to assist in turns while running. Harvesting a Barbary Sheep should yield a fair amount of resources, particularly meat and hide.įound throughout most of northern and southern Africa, Ostriches live in roaming flocks, and are omnivorous. Outrunning them shouldn't be too difficult, but killing them shouldn't be either they're built a lot like the Gazelle already in the game. They may be found alone, or in small groups.īarbary Sheep aren't a threat unless provoked, but if so will likely charge the player. Them's good eatin'.Ĭommon throughout the Barbary Coast and the Sahara Desert, Barbary Sheep are roving, grazing herbivores, and are usually found not only in deserts, but mountainous regions as well (in other words, they're perfect for all the terrain in Starsand). The good news is that you'd likely get pretty good resources from a Rabbit. They'll also flee very, very fast, and coupled with their small size, a bolting rabbit will be hard to hit. Rabbits present no threat to the player whatsoever, and will simply flee if attacked or approached. Because of how resourceful and adaptive Rabbits are, and because they breed like - well. These are my suggestions for what could be added, and how they'll affect the game. Even places like the Sahara Desert (which the world Starsand takes place on is more or less a surreal version of) are deceptively teeming with life, so I'm of the opinion that there should be more animals in the game. Right now, there's only a handful of critters to be found anywhere in Starsand.
